Hanukkah Flowers

Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, celebrates the victory of the Jews over Greek persecution. When the Maccabees, the leaders of the war against the Syrians, reclaimed the Temple, they only had one flask of oil to light the Menorah. Miraculously the Menorah stayed lit for eight days - thus the eight days of Hanukkah, which begin on the 25th day of the Hebrew month of Kislev.

Hanukkah Flower Decorating and Entertaining Ideas

Ask your florist to design a festive arrangement featuring flowers in the traditional Hanukkah blue and white - perfect for a centerpiece or to greet guests on a table in the foyer.

Use fresh evergreens to decorate around the menorah. Place colorful dreidels and chocolate coins around the table for kids to enjoy.

If an open house is on the agenda and many persons will be in a room, it is important to give special attention to the larger display areas such as the front door, foyer, mantle, buffet or serving areas, powder rooms, windows and staircase. This will help you get maximum impact because with many people in a room smaller arrangements placed around will not be seen at all times. Additionally, by focusing on a few focal areas in each room, more space is made for glasses, cups and food plates and there is less chance of an accident.

As guests leave, have a vase of loose flowers by the door and invite them to take one home as a gift.

For an elegant celebration, take advantage of all places where candles could be displayed:

Line a walkway with votive candles in luminaries leading up to a door.

Place garland on the mantle with fresh flowers and candles to beautifully grace your room and make the most of light by enhancing the fire.

Float candles and flowers in treasured crystal or silver bowls to create a fabulous effect.

Place scented candles with fresh blossoms in each powder room.

Webkinz Mazin' Hamsters now at Exotic Flowers in Boston

The "Mazin' Hamsters" is a feature that arrived in Webkinz World in July 2010. Players entering the feature code off of the Hamsters will gain access to a new 3D feature in Webkinz World.

Hamster Pets

There are six different plushie hamsters and two different virtual-only hamsters in the initial Mazin' Hamsters release. Each hamster comes with its own special ball design and tube design (like wallpaper/flooring), and a set of "starter" tubes. Collecting multiple hamsters gives players more design options for their mazes, helps them to make their mazes faster, and allows players to save more maze designs.

Although each hamster comes with a name, you can change this name at the naming station. Now is a great opportunity to pick them up at Exotic Flowers in Boston, Quincy Market and Faneuil Hall.

Home Ecology of Flowers Study

Harvard Research Team Reveals:

Living with Flowers Strengthens Feelings of Compassion,

Decreases Anxiety and Worry

Can the mere presence of flowers in the home change people’s moods or state of mind? Can the effects carry over into our daily lives? New research, a result of a collective effort and strategic alliance by SAF and the Flower Promotion Organization (FPO), says yes.

Powerful Partnership

Throughout 2006, the SAF/FPO Alliance partnered with Nancy Etcoff, Ph.D., of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, to explore the effects of flowers in the home environment on well-being. The four-month behavioral research study concluded that people feel more compassionate toward others, have less worry and anxiety, and feel less depressed when fresh cut flowers are present in the home.

Main Findings

Flowers feed compassion.

Study participants who lived with flowers for less than a week felt an increase in feelings of compassion for others.

Flowers chase away anxieties, worries and the blues at home.

Overall, people in the study simply felt less negative after being around flowers at home for just a few days. People can feel the power of flowers: Participants most frequently placed the flowers in their kitchens, dining rooms and living rooms, where they spend a lot of time at home. They reported wanting to see the blooms first thing in the morning.

Living with flowers can provide a boost of energy, happiness and enthusiasm at work.

Having flowers at home can have a positive carry-over impact on our mood at work, too. The study found that people are more likely to feel happier and have more enthusiasm and energy at work when flowers are in their home living environments.

To our neighbors. Trust your local Boston florist, Exotic Flowers to decrease worry.

Thanks to friend Todd Civin for a Glowing Endorsement

"Lagniappe is a French Cajun word that means “beyond full measure” or “to give a little extra.” It is best described as the equivalent of giving someone a 13th ear of corn when they only pay for a dozen, but in everything they do.

I learned about the word when creating a story about my friend Roger Crawford, a skilled athlete and motivational speaker. I use the word sparingly in my own personal vocabulary because there are very few who earn the respect of being associated with such an awesome word. So few unfortunately who truly "give a little extra" in all that they do.

Rick Canale, however, is worthy of having the word used when describing him as a friend and a business person. He goes beyond full measure in all he does. He gets it. Why give the maximum when you can give a little bit more than the maximum?

As a customer of Exotic Flowers and a friend and fan of Rick Canale, the human being, I can do no better than to describe Rick as a Lagniappe."

July 12th, 2010 - Sonny has owned & operated Exotic Flowers for 53 Years

53 Years ago today --
Embarking upon his ambition to fulfill the American dream, Arnold "Sonny" Canale bought Lombardi Florist in 1957. He had been an employee there since 1943. Lombardi's had been a successful florist and nursery since the early 1900's. In 1959, Sonny married Marie "Russo" Canale and merged Lombardi's with her family's florist, Russo's Florist. Russo's Florist had been in business since the early 1900's when Marie's parents arrived from Ponza, Italy.

Foreseeing the changing economy in the coming millennium, Sonny adopted the name Exotic Flowers as its primary signature for doing business in 1993. In 1994 a satellite location was opened at 2 Dartmouth Street in Boston's South End. In 1995, in order to expand our services, we opened a full service floral shop and garden center on route 3A in Cohasset. In June 2001 our flagship store opened at the greenhouse at Faneuil Hall Marketplace. Roslindale remains company headquarters. All phone calls, on line orders, and deliveries emanate from this location.

In 2007, Exotic Flowers partnered with the Boston Red Sox to be The Official Florist of the Boston Red Sox. Exotic Flowers was thrilled to be such a special part of their World Champion season. Our success with the team led to the development of our online memorabilia store, www.fenway1912.com Exotic Flowers firmly believes in sports and their benefit to society. We have been the florist for the PGA Deutsche Bank Championship since its inception, and in 2010 partnered with the Women's Professional Soccer team - the Boston Breakers (www.bostonbreakers.com)as their official florist. Exotic Flowers and Lombardi Florist have also been proud to sponsor our local softball teams and reward our Little League Champions.

Exotic Flowers realizes we are a part of the community and continue to do our best by employing a strong business ethic and offering a beautfiul destination florist in Boston. One can always come in for free plant advice at any time.In 2009, Exotic Flowers closely worked with Fisher House Boston - who provides care for our wounded veterans and their families at the Veterans Hospital in West Roxbury, MA.

Exotic Flowers remains a family owned and operated business. Sonny and Marie work daily and their children all play integral roles in the future of the company. Lauren Canale Trifiro operates an online florist from Scituate. John Canale works part time and offers his experience and customer service skills for the benefit of the growth of Exotic Flowers. Rick Canale oversees the daily operations and ensures that Exotic Flowers remains Boston's Premier Florist.

Press Release: Rutgers Study - Life Satisfaction

SCIENCE AND NATURE UNEARTH NEW INSIGHTS INTO EMOTIONAL HEALTH

Rutgers Behavioral Study Links Flowers and Life Satisfaction

BOSTON, MA - With today's high-tech and fast-paced lifestyle taking its daily toll on our lives, experts advise exercise and other personal lifestyle changes to relieve stress. According to behavioral research conducted at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, nature provides us with a simple way to improve emotional health - flowers. The presence of flowers triggers happy emotions, heightens feelings of life satisfaction and affects social behavior in a positive manner far beyond what is normally believed.

"What's most exciting about this study is that it challenges established scientific beliefs about how people can manage their day-to-day moods in a healthy and natural way," said Jeannette Haviland-Jones, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology at Rutgers and lead researcher on the study.

Research Findings

A team of researchers explored the link between flowers and life satisfaction in a 10-month study of participants' behavioral and emotional responses to receiving flowers. The results show that flowers are a natural and healthful moderator of moods.

1. Flowers have an immediate impact on happiness. All study participants expressed "true" or "excited" smiles upon receiving flowers, demonstrating extraordinary delight and gratitude. This reaction was universal, occurring in all age groups.

2. Flowers have a long-term positive effect on moods. Specifically, study participants reported feeling less depressed, anxious and agitated after receiving flowers, and demonstrated a higher sense of enjoyment and life satisfaction.

3. Flowers make intimate connections. The presence of flowers led to increased contact with family and friends.

"Common sense tells us that flowers make us happy," said Dr. Haviland-Jones. "Now, science shows that not only do flowers make us happier than we know, they have strong positive effects on our emotional well being."

Sharing Space

The study also explored where in their homes people display flowers. The arrangements were placed in areas of the home that are open to visitors - such as foyers, living rooms and dining rooms - suggesting that flowers are a symbol for sharing.

"Flowers bring about positive emotional feelings in those who enter a room," said Dr. Haviland-Jones. "They make the space more welcoming and create a sharing atmosphere."

# # #

Background

The Emotional Impact of Flowers Study was conducted by Jeannette M. Haviland-Jones, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology, Project Director, Human Development Lab at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. Dr. Haviland-Jones is a psychologist and internationally recognized authority in the role of emotional development in human behavior and nonverbal emotional signals and response.

The research adds a scientific foundation to what many consider to be common knowledge - that flowers have a strong, beneficial impact on those who receive them. The Society of American Florists worked in cooperation with the Rutgers research team, bringing an expertise of flowers to the project.

Planting Season in New England is in full Swing.

The traditional New England planting season begins on Memorial Day Weekend. At my home in Boston, Suzie and I have been cheating mother nature by beginning a bit earlier. Now we have a large herb garden along with hibiscus topiaries, mixed annual planters along with the return of our blue hostas and Endless Summer Hydrangeas.
Our garden center in Roslindale is featuring some monster size hydrangeas and over 500 flowering hanging plants.
White impatiens are plentiful at Exotic Flowers garden center in Roslindale. They are a spreading low growing annual plant. Impatiens flower until November. They are easy to care for and quite economical. We are offering 48 plants right now for $15.
This morning, singer/songwriter James Taylor's landscaper bought a few hundred white impatiens plants for the legend.

Orchid Leis

A west coast tradition has come to the northeast; west coast graduates for many years have worn orchid leis to their graduation ceremony. Now we are seeing more and more each year in the northeast. At Exotic Flowers in Boston, we offer orchid leis made of dendrobium orchids.

Dendrobium orchids are not only colorful, but also hardy. These orchid blooms can withstand heat, hugging and all the elements of graduation day.
Orchid leis also have their own tradition of wear as well; always accept a lei when given one; drape gently over the shoulder hanging down in both the back and the front; and never remove a lei from your enck in the presence of the person who gave it to you.

Prom Flowers

Exotic Flowers knows how very important prom flowers are to our young customers and are happy to work with you to make your corsages and boutonnieres special. If you have your heart set on a certain corsage style or type of flower, then there is nothing wrong with letting your date know what you would like. You might even suggest going to Exotic Flowers together to pick out your flowers. We are experts at customization. Show your dress (or a swatch of the fabric) to us and ask us to select an appropriate ribbon. Or you can ask to see what ribbons we have on hand and choose one yourself.

New Trends for Prom Flowers:

Two popular styles are wrist corsages and small hand-held nosegays (and they look great with strapless dresses!).

Popular flowers are mini (or sweetheart) roses, standard roses, dendrobium orchids, alstroemeria, lilies, mini carnations and other small flowers such as cornflowers and freesia.

Flowers for your hair or neck or corsages pinned to an evening bag are also great choices.

Mother's Day Gift Ideas for Kids

Give Mom a "double feature." Provide your florist with the latest edition of the newspaper movie section, and ask him to include it in a box of flowers. Decorate the outside of the box with movie theater candy and attach a card that tells Mom she gets to see a movie of her choice. Of course, you buy the tickets and the popcorn!

Let Mom know you think she is your treasure with a treasure hunt! Visit your local flower shop and pick out several pretty stems of flowers. Ask the florist to put water tubes on the flowers. Tell Mom that she is on a treasure hunt and give her clues as to where she can find each of the flowers. At the end of the hunt, have an empty vase ready with a card telling Mom what a treasure she is to you. Then you can arrange the flowers in the vase together.

Give Mom a kitchen break. Take a cooking pot from your kitchen along with some kitchen utensils to your florist. Ask him to make a floral arrangement in the pot that includes the utensils. Give the arrangement to Mom with a note that tells her she is getting a kitchen break. Then let her sit back and relax while you and Dad prepare dinner.

Surprise Mom with a home pampering party. When she comes in the door, have rose petals on the floor leading to the bathroom. Prepare a bubble bath and float rose petals in the water. Place small vases of flowers on the edge of the tub with scented candles and a cup of tea or a glass of wine. Then leave her alone to relax.

Breakfast in bed is a treat that every Mom loves. Dads and kids can prepare a special morning for Mom by greeting her with a homemade breakfast in bed, on a tray adorned with fresh flowers.

For a very personal tribute, write her a note telling Mom why you're glad she's your mom and attach it to a long stemmed rose.

Present Mom with a vase of her favorite flowers. On each stem tie a "coupon" for a chore that you promise to do.

Mother's Day Tips to Pamper Mom

For all the work Mom does throughout the year she deserves to be pampered on Mother's Day. The Society of American Florists has provided the following tips to make Mom feel extra special:

If you're planning on taking Mom out to eat, take a plate, bowl, napkin and set of silverware to your florist the week before Mother's Day. Ask your florist to make a floral arrangement in the bowl and include the silverware among the flowers. Then slip in an invitation to her favorite restaurant.

Invite Mom to brunch or dinner at her favorite restaurant and have a flower arrangement delivered right to your table for all to see.

For Moms that like to cook, ask your florist to create an herb garden design with several small pots of herbs.

Make a special tribute to Mom by sending a decorated "Mother's Day Tree." The week before Mother's Day, take several of your favorite family photos to your florist and ask him to attach them to a plant or miniature tree using colorful ribbons. Prepare the photos ahead of time by pasting them onto pretty colored papers or put them in small frames.

If your Mom is planning on attending worship on Mother's Day, find out what she plans to wear and ask your florist to design a special corsage to match. For a very special twist, choose a new dress or hat for Mom and have it boxed and wrapped with the corsage in place of a bow on the outside.

Give Mom something to relax with by wrapping a new book and asking your florist to place it into a fragrant flower bouquet with a note that reads "Today is your day to relax!"

Ask your florist to help you create a special spa kit. A few days ahead of time, bring goodies like nail polish, a loofa sponge, bath crystals, oils and other pampering items to your florist and have him design a basket with the spa items on one side and flowers on the other. You could even add a certificate for a manicure, pedicure, massage or spa treatments at a local day spa or salon.

If you want to surprise Mom from across the miles, ask a florist in her town to make a floral arrangement and include an airline ticket for a visit to you. Be sure to mail the ticket to the florist well in advance and confirm that he received it.

Incorporate flowers into a theme gift. If Mom is an avid gardener, ask the florist to create a design that includes gardening goodies such as a trowel, garden gloves, seed packets and tools. If Mom is a bird watcher, how about a design in a bird feeder? An athletic would certainly appreciate a pair of workout shoes - with flowers arranged inside. Tennis balls, golf balls or sport headbands can be a unique addition to any floral arrangement. If Mom loves clothes or jewelry, tie a scarf or drape a necklace around a vase of flowers to make the gift extra special.

Mother's Day History

Mother's Day Flowers

The first celebrations of Mother's Day can be traced back to the ancient Greeks, who worshiped mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele. During the 1600s in England a special day was set apart as Mothering Day, a day of taking small cakes and trinkets to mothers.

In the United States the idea for Mother's Day has generally been credited to Anna Jarvis. The first Mother's Day observance was a church service held at her request in Grafton, West Virginia (the burial place of her mother) on May 10, 1908. Because of her mother's fondness for them, Miss Jarvis wore a carnation to that first service. She went on to play an active role in encouraging the government to establish a national holiday to honor mothers everywhere. By 1911 Mother's Day was being celebrated throughout the United States, as well as in Mexico, Canada, South America, China, Japan and Africa. On May 9, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday in May as National Mother's Day and asked all Americans to offer their respect and love for mothers publicly.
